Mathematics

At Wheatfields Primary school, we aim for all pupils to develop confidence and enjoyment in mathematics, alongside the skills needed to reason, problem solve and make connections across the curriculum.

We teach mathematics using a Teaching for Mastery approach, delivered through the White Rose Maths curriculum. Key features of our approach include:

  • Small steps learning
Concepts are broken down into manageable steps to support understanding and progression.
  • Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract (CPA) representations
Pupils use practical resources and visual models before working with abstract symbols to help them understand mathematical structures.
  • Fluency
In addition to daily maths lessons, pupils take part in regular stand-alone fluency sessions each week to develop accuracy and efficiency. These sessions focus on developing number sense, rapid recall of key facts and methods.
    1. In EYFS, fluency is taught through Mastering Number, which forms the core of daily Mathematics teaching.
    2. In Key Stage 1, Mastering Number is used as a dedicated fluency programme and pupils also take part in explicit times table sessions to support the development of multiplication and division facts.
    3. In Key Stage 2, pupils have regular times tables sessions alongside additional fluency practice, planned by teachers to meet the needs of their classes rather than following a set scheme.
  • Reasoning and Problem Solving
Pupils explain their thinking, justify answers, spot patterns and use appropriate mathematical vocabulary. A strong emphasis is placed on depth of understanding rather than acceleration.
  • Problem solving
Pupils apply their learning to a range of problems, developing resilience and perseverance.

At Wheatfields Primary, we believe all children can achieve in maths. We promote a growth mind-set, encouraging pupils to see mistakes as an important part of learning and to approach maths with confidence and positivity.

Learning Platforms
To support learning in school and at home, we encourage pupils to use the following online platforms:

  • Freckle - used to support fluency, reasoning and personalised practice.
  • Time Tables Rock Stars- used to develop rapid recall of multiplication and division facts.

These platforms are used to reinforce classroom learning and provide additional opportunities for practice.
