New school councillors are elected every year. Everyone gets a chance to vote for their class representative. We are elected because we are good at listening to what our friends have to say. We are also responsible, good at expressing ideas, and are able to share these ideas coherently in meetings. Children feel we are listened to and that we are helping to move our school forward.
The School Council includes children from all school years to talk about school. We are always asked what works or doesn’t, what is best for school, ideas for changes, and bring feedback to Mrs Verney-Davies.
As a Council we discussed how we feel about school and what we like about it:
- If you are stuck there is always an adult to help you. Teachers have high expectations but they are kind and helpful.
- A good variety of subjects
- Lots of good clubs after school
- Very easy to make lots of friends
- We have musical instruments and teachers that come in from outside school to have 1 to 1 lessons if we wish
- School meals are tasty and filling – it was agreed we all like fish fingers and the desserts are brilliant! There are lots of options
- The learning is fun
- Good use of chrome-books, tablets, ipads, laptops, kindles and geo-books.
- Teachers listen to what we have to say and we get lots of support with learning to build our confidence
- We have lots of different interactive whiteboards
The things we love about all the extra-curricular things on offer:
- Christmas and Summer Fairs
- Year 6 productions
- School discos are really fun
- Sponsored events
- Sports days
- Public Speaking competition
- Animal visits, eg the Raptor Foundation
- Sports Clubs including Limitless
- Assemblies which celebrate learning and achievements
- School residentials! “Ironbridge was a great opportunity to make bonds as a year group” and “Thorpe had lots of fun activities that helped you to step out of your comfort zone”
