Music

Wheatfields Primary School teach Music using a county endorsed Music School Scheme called ‘Charanga’.

The Charanga Musical School Scheme provides teachers with week-by-week lesson support for each year group in the school. It is ideal for specialist and non-specialist teachers alike, and provides lesson plans, assessment, clear progression, and engaging and exciting whiteboard resources to support every lesson. The Scheme supports all the requirements of the national curriculum.

In line with the curriculum for music and guidance from Ofsted, this Scheme moves away from the previous levels and learning objective/outcome concepts to an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning.

The learning progression diagram depicts the depth of learning that occurs as the children move through the year groups. As they progress, the colour deepens and the learning widens.

All musical learning in this scheme is built around the Interrelated Dimensions of Music: pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure and notation. These dimensions are at the centre of all the learning.

Please see below for curriculum progression maps for each year group and how vocabulary changes and develops as the children get older.

All children have access to Charanga logins for use at home so that they can consolidate the learning they have been doing in the classroom, and explore other areas that might interest them, including the use of music technology.

For those children interested in extracurricular opportunities, we offer a varied range of performing arts and musical opportunities, including:

  • Choir
  • Dance
  • Cheer Club

and individual or group tuition in:

  • Violin
  • Recorder
  • Flute
  • Clarinet
  • Drums
  • Piano
  • Ukulele
  • Guitar

The choir (KS2 only) meet once a week and attend a national concert at the O2 every other year called Young Voices. We have an annual concert to showcase our talents and invite all our young performers to take part.

Clubs letters are sent out every half term. Please contact the office if you are interested in your child attending a club or receiving music tuition. If you need support with the cost of clubs or tuition, please do speak with the school as we may be able to help.
