The pupil premium is an allocation of additional funding provided to schools to support specific groups of children who are vulnerable to possible underachievement. These include pupils who are entitled to Free School Meals, those Looked After by the local authority (children in care) or who have parents in the Armed Forces. All schools are required to report on the amount of funding received, how this is being used and, once available, the impact the funding has had.
The national trend is that pupils who are eligible for free school meals have lower achievement than those who are not eligible. The pupil premium grant is used to help narrow this gap.

Cambridgeshire County Council have issued their annual flyer for parents (see below) and the additional notes for your guidance, to remind parents to apply if they have not already done so:
If their child is already on FSM in a Primary School in Cambridgeshire and are moving to Secondary School, they do not need to re-apply (unless the family have moved house in the last year or parents have changed their name in recent years, then we will need the updated information to recheck their entitlement in 2025).
Parents must apply for any NEW children starting school. They can’t assume that because their oldest child qualifies for FSM and is under the protection period until 2025, that the youngest child will automatically qualify too. Some older children are protected, but the family may no longer qualify.
We cannot simply add the youngest children who are just starting school as they may no longer be eligible if circumstances have changed since the older child's claim began.
Parents who have applied for EYPP before will need to re-apply for FSM if: they have moved house in the last year, or the parents have changed their name in recent years, so that we have updated information to re-check their entitlement.
(EYPP status does not automatically become FSM entitlement once their child begins school).
